Currently, there are several certifications for sustainable wood management that a company committed to the environment and with a clear intention of protecting forests should comply with. We need to build and create to live, but we have the responsibility to exploit resources such as a forest with the least ecological footprint and regenerate it to avoid losing it. We cannot ignore the importance of protecting forests today more than ever.
For this reason, an accredited and independent certifying entity visits us periodically to evaluate our work and conduct audits. This way, we can obtain the corresponding seal of certifications for sustainable wood management.
Protecting forests is more than necessary
The ecosystems existing in forests contribute to maintaining balance in the biosphere. Forests help to cope with dangerous natural phenomena such as heavy rains, floods, and hurricane winds. They also prevent soil erosion.
Furthermore, they promote biodiversity, as they host the majority of terrestrial animals and plants on the planet, as specified by the FAO. Protecting them is of vital importance to mitigate the effects of climate change and to be able to develop our socio-economic activities sustainably now and in the future.
PEFC Certification
Biscay Timber holds the PEFC certification (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), which is the most widely implemented internationally. It ensures that the wood it trades comes from forests managed sustainably and includes Chain of Custody.
FSC Certification
The FSC Certification (Forest Stewardship Council) ensures that the wood comes from acceptable, environmentally and socially responsible sources. In addition to having a legal origin, it is authorized to be mixed with other woods that are also certified.
NIMF Certification
Among the certifications for sustainable wood management, it is also very important to have the seal of the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures, NIMF 15. It refers to the regulation of wooden packaging used in international trade.
It takes into account a series of specific measures to reduce the risk of introducing and/or spreading insects. The main objective is the prevention of pests related to packaging for wood transportation.
